This month is National Bed Month, so what better time analyse your sleep and see if your bed needs a refresh!
There are some signs to look out for that could mean your bed is on its way out, and all of these could be affecting the overall quality of your sleep.
A good night’s sleep should leave you feeling fit and ready to face the day. So, to avoid insomnia and make sure you wake up feeling well rested every morning, take a look at some of the signs that might mean you need a new bed.
Your Mattress is Old
This isn’t so much a sign, but a fact. The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7 to 10 years for the optimum quality to be retained.
The lifespan of a mattress can vary a lot depending on how often you rotate it, how you sleep on it and how you take care of it, but as a guideline this should help you assess whether this could be affecting your sleep!
Even if you don’t feel like your sleep is being impacted by a 20-year-old mattress, it’s always a good idea to update your mattress. You may even uncover a level of comfort and sleep you didn’t know existed.
Are Other Beds Better?
Have you stayed in a hotel or at a friend’s house recently and found your night’s sleep to be so much better there? The chances are their mattress is newer than your one at home, or it could just be better suited to your needs.
A mattress with better support could make your night’s sleep so much more enjoyable. If you find you’re sleeping better elsewhere, it may be time to reassess your bed situation at home.
Don’t just think about the age of a mattress, think about the firmness and features of a mattress as well.
Stiffness and Aches
Waking up with aches and pains and stiffness is a sure sign that something isn’t quite right with your bed or mattress.
Sleeping shouldn’t cause these issues, therefore if you find this keeps happening you should most certainly look to invest in a new mattress.
Is Your Mattress Lumpy?
Lumps, bumps and uneven patches on your mattress could mean that the springs have gone, and the mattress is ready to be replaced.
A lumpy mattress can cause all sorts of discomfort and disruption to your sleep, so as soon as you notice this it’s time to change your mattress over.
Are you sleeping as well as you did a year ago?
Even in as short amount of time as a year you can find your sleep becoming worse. If you’re not sleeping as well as you were a year ago, look at changing your bed and mattress to eliminate this as a possibility.
Even if your mattress isn’t worn, it’s still entirely possible you have the wrong mattress type. Soft, medium firm and hard firm mattresses all have different properties that suit different people.
